Aspidium aristatum (G.Forst.) Sw. var. simplicior Makino [Bot. Mag. (Tokyo) 15(170): 65, 1901.]
Stipe slender, longer or shorter than the frond, scaly throughout but much densely so towards the base, stramineous ; scales ferruginous-brown or fuscous-brown linear, hairy acuminate, intermixed with hairy ones.
Frond ovate, abrupt above and with a prolonged acuminate terminal pinna at the apex, subtripinnate, coriaceous in texture, naked and more or less nitid above more or less minutely scaly towards the costæ of pinnules beneath, viridescent when dried ; main rachis slender, scaly ; pinnæ 3 to 5 on each side, patulous or erect-patent, laxly placed,shortly petioled, narrowly lanceolate, slightly falcate, acuminate, often albescent at the centre, the lowest one largest and each with a large branch pinna at the base on the outside ; pinnules numerous, closely placed, patulous, oblong-lanceolate, slightly falcate, very shortly pedicellate or sessile, obliquely cuneate at the base, obtuse with a spinulose tooth at the apex, spinulosely lobulate-serrulate, the inferior ones usually subpinnate or pinnatifid.
Sori copious, larger than those of the typica, arranged nearer the margin than the costa of pinnules.
It has the simpler form than the type, and in appearance it is like Aspidium amabile Blume.

葉柄は細く、葉身より長い場合もあれば短い場合もある。鱗片が全体を覆うが、基部に向かって特に密生する。藁色。鱗片は赤褐色または黒褐色で線形、毛状に先鋭であって、線形のものと毛状のものが混ざって生える。葉身は卵形、先端に向かって急に尖り、長く伸びた尖頭の頂羽片を持つ。亜三回羽状複葉で質は革質。向軸面は無毛で多少微細な鱗片が覆う。背軸面は羽軸に向かって多少微細な鱗片が着く。乾燥標本で緑色。葉軸は細く、鱗片に覆われる。側羽片は3-5対で、開出または斜上する。側羽片は間隔を空けて着き、短い柄がある。狭披針形で、僅かに鎌状に曲がり、鋭頭。しばしば中央が白みがかる。最下羽片が最も大きく、それぞれ大きな外側第一小羽片を伴う。小羽片は多数が密に開出して着き、長楕円形-披針形で、僅かに鎌状に曲がる。非常に短い柄を有するか無柄で、基部は斜めになった楔型で、先端に棘状歯を伴う鈍頭。棘状になった裂片-鋸歯があり、基部のものはよく亜羽状または羽状に裂ける。ソーラスは大量に着き、基本種に比して大きく、裂片の主脈に比して辺縁寄りに着く。
基本種 (＊ホソバカナワラビ) より単純な形態をしており、外見はオオカナワラビに似ている。
［分類上の変遷］
松村は帝国植物名鑑 1: 341, 1904においてPolystichum aristatum (G.Forst.) C.Presl var. simplicior (Makino) Matsum.と属の組み換えを行っている。その後田川がActa Phytotax. Geobot. 1(1): 90, 1932においてPolystichum simplicior (Makino) Tagawaと独立種として扱い、Sinensia 5(1-2): 43, 1934においてRumohra simplicior (Makino) Ching、J. Jap. Bot. 33(3): 95, 1958においてPolystichopsis simplicior (Makino) Tagawa、Enum. Jap. Pterid. 339, 1961においてByrsopteris simplicior (Makino) Sa.Kurata、J. Jap. Bot. 37(3): 76, 1962においてArachniodes simplicior (Makino) Ohwiと所属する属が転々と組み替えられているが、独立種としての扱いは変更されていない。現行のFernGreenList ver. 2.0では大井のA. simplicior (Makino) Ohwiの学名が採用されている。
